Spring 2008

Dear Parents/Students:

I think spring is finally here. We have had some slightly warmer days and some sunshine to try and convince us. Along with the sunshine comes increased outdoor activities and it becomes more of a challenge to get indoor practice time at the piano.

Students have worked very hard this year and have had lots of indoor time, so try to keep practices fun and lighthearted. Practices can include improvising at the piano, learning how to read from chord charts, composing, playing music games online and reviewing favorite songs.

This is also a great time to add a new music book to your home library. Students will enjoy have a book of fun music to enjoy over the summer. Let me know if you need help choosing an appropriate level. Sound Advice in Courtenay has a good selection. Music may also be ordered online at www.tomleemusic.ca

Exam students have a very busy couple of months ahead of them. Please encourage these students as it takes a huge effort to stay enthusiastic with pieces that are played for a long time. Also, take an interest in their technique (scales etc.) It can be helpful for a parent or sibling to call out scale keys for students to try and play.

Students will need positive audiences. Be willing to hear an exam selection. You will be impressed at the progress that will be made week to week. Know your child's exam time and have it on your calendar. If there are school exam conflicts, be sure to notify your representative as soon as you know and they will do their best to trade times if a spot becomes available. www.rcmexaminations.org

Pre-registration forms have been handed out for fall 2008. Please let you know if you haven't received one. Students that are currently studying with me have first priority in my fall schedule, but I will need to know your plans soon so I can reserve their lesson time.

Summer Theory classes will be offered this year for students that want to complete a level of theory, but find it hard to do during the school year. This class will be for enthusiastic students ready to do Rudiments I or II. Let me know if you are interested in additional details. A Preliminary Rudiments class will be considered by request.

I am looking forward to the next couple of months of enjoying music together.

Musically,

Amie
