Winter 2008
Dear Parents/Students:
With a skiff of snow on the ground this morning, today seemed like the perfect day to write a "winter" newsletter. We are almost through January, which for music students, is usually one of the hardest months of the year.
You may find that you/your child may need some extra encouragement. Piano can be fun, but there are days that it is very tough. It is tricky to combine rhythms, melodies and harmonies all played by different fingers at varying moments to create music ... try adding the concept of pedaling and then throw in some dynamics to the music and it is easy to understand why pianists of all ages can get overwhelmed.
This is a good chance for you to take an interest in your child's studies. Even if you can't play the piano yourself, there are ways you can help!
- Especially the first day after lessons, try to make sure you/your child have a chance to practice while what they have learned is still fresh from the day before.
- For young students, help them find the pages they need to practice and read their notebook for instructions.
- You could pick up some tiny stickers for them to mark off their practices in their notebooks.
- Make sure your child has opportunities to practice each day.
- Listen to what they play and encourage them if they stop to fix a mistake, play with interesting dynamics or perform for friends or family...
- Listen to music together. It can be any style. Ask them what they like to play and what their favorite songs are.
- Give me a call or send an email if you have questions or need some extra help with motivation. I only see students once a week and although I can see symptoms, I don't always know what the story is at home! I value your input.
Please Remember:
- To check student notebooks weekly for notes & upcoming events.
- Students will begin practicing soon for our Spring Recital. Exact dates and times will follow in the next couple of weeks.
- Exam deadlines are coming up in March for May/June exams.
The Campbell River Friends of Music Festival is also coming up at the end of April/Early May. Let me know if your child would like to participate in this festival.
Summer Theory Classes: I am considering teaching a one-week theory group class. (9-12 daily). This class would be a jump-start course and enable students to work at their own pace, with assistance in a fun, group environment. Let me know if you would like more details.
I enjoy working with each of my students and learn daily lessons from them of patience, perseverance and a sense of humor! I look forward to learning together for the rest of the year.
Musically,
